AGC Fundraising for the Flood-Affected Senior Home in Krnov
The September floods in the Czech Republic caused enormous damage and also sparked a great wave of solidarity. Volunteers helped directly in the affected areas, various charitable fundraisers were organized, and donors provided material assistance and filled food banks. AGC also decided to express its support for the people affected by the floods through a fundraiser for the restoration of the Senior Home in Krnov, which was significantly impacted by the floodwaters. The proceeds from the fundraiser were handed over to the management of the Krnov senior home last week, with a total amount of 100,000 CZK raised.
The mission of the Senior Home in Krnov is to provide residential social services for elderly people who are dependent on the help of another person, requiring a constant care and support that cannot be provided in their natural environment.
The target group of clients are seniors over 65 years old with demonstrably reduced self-sufficiency to complete dependency, mainly due to age, whose situation requires regular assistance from another person and cannot be provided by family or other types of social services. The capacity of the residential service home is 97 places.
However, the Senior Home in Krnov was significantly affected by the flood in September.
The kitchen, laundry, and backup power source - the diesel generator - were completely destroyed. Storage rooms, cooling rooms, offices, and staff facilities were flooded. In most of the flooded areas, floors, tiles, windows, plaster, etc., were damaged. Heat and hot water exchangers were destroyed. Both freight and passenger elevators were significantly damaged. The garden and its furniture were completely destroyed.
The home also operates a care service. It has three centres, two of which were completely flooded and are still non-functional, so the care service is temporarily operating in an apartment provided by the city of Krnov. Financially, the damages amount to several tens of millions of crowns.
The senior home was overwhelmed by a great wave of solidarity in the form of material, financial, and food donations from companies, social facilities, private entities, and individuals who decided to help. A significant help came from numerous volunteers who came to the Home from all over the country. AGC also decided to express its support for the seniors through a financial collection. This collection ended at the beginning of November, and a total amount of 100,000 CZK was raised. The proceeds from the collection were handed over to the management of the Senior Home in Krnov on November 19.
We sincerely thank those who contributed to the fundraiser!
Currently, the operation of the home has been restored to such an extent that all basic functions are working as they should, albeit often in an alternative manner. The laundry has been partially restored in its original basement premises. The kitchen is still non-functional, and hot meals are currently being supplied from the hospital kitchen in Krnov.
However, the assistance provided by AGC Flat Glass Czech to the Senior Home in Krnov does not end here. The water in the flooded areas also damaged the glass fillings of windows and doors, which need to be replaced. As part of the restoration, new glass fillings will be manufactured at the Salaš Plant, AGC Fenestra a.s., and will subsequently be donated to the home by AGC.
